Polo (Paul Balland)  biography

Polo is a French\British, London-based photographer (born from English mother and French father).

His practice explores the relations of urban, natural and industrial environments, mostly derelict and often forgotten, with the aesthetics of the oneiric (a dreamlike reality).

Polo's research starts from his interest in marginal areas that contain traces of multiple layers of everyday human life and working activities. These traces are often unknown and unperceived to the public attention.

Polo researches for places that are of non-aesthetic interest, but that are intensive references of human geographies and local cultures.

His attention is not in photo-documentation . Polo explores industrial, residential and environmental landscapes enhancing alternative focuses on them. These focuses and his camera are instrumental to create his original narrative of dreamlike realities, through manifesting unexpected, fantastic, imaginary worlds, although preserving their intensity as human testimony.

Starting from exploring sites of interest in cities, suburbs and countryside, Polo identifies chromatic or textural details of walls, pavements, architectural structures, derelict and found objects. Within this extensive archive of places and objects, and through the lenses of his camera, he captures the dream.

The result is always abstract and suggestive. Inspired by the legacy of artists like Gerhard Richter and Mark Rothko. Through his work Polo invites the viewers to discover an alternative aesthetic, searching for new elements of beauty, between reality and imagination.

In the past 15 years, Polo has developed his practice of fine art photographer  shooting and collecting a large archive of images and works that are related to places worth it to explore for the cultural originality of the local communities and their environment.

Polo has so far developed specific projects that juxtapose the peculiarity of textures, colours and materials of cities, suburbs and natural sites; from the warm, light and colourful of Majorca to the metropolitan, multiethnic and energetic New York City, to the polyhedral, cutting edge, avant-garde, arty London.

Polo offers the viewer with unexpected beauty which emerges from his unconventional vision that creates the possibility of imaginary worlds, and through the coexistence and conversation of contemporary and period architecture, luxuriant nature and cold, metallic, industrial landscape, making the dream to unveil.

Polo est un photographe franco-britannique basé à Londres.

Son travail explore la relation entre les environnements urbains, naturels et industriels, pour la plupart abandonnés et souvent oubliés, et les visions esthétisantes de l'onirique, sorte de réalité rêvée.

Sa quête trouve son point d’ancrage dans l'intérêt qu'il porte aux lieux marginaux, ceux qui retiennent les traces des multiples strates de la vie quotidienne et d'activités professionnelles/du monde du travail.

Celles-ci sont souvent méconnues et imperceptibles aux yeux du public.

Polo est constamment à la recherche de lieux non pas d'intérêt esthétique mais faisant intensément référence à la géographie humaine et aux cultures locales.

Ce n'est pas tant la documentation photographique qui l'attire que la recherche de paysages industriels, résidentiels, de l’environnement, provoquant ainsi un regard différent.

Les instruments que sont l'objectif et son regard sa vision participent à la narration de réalités rêvées en manifestant l'inattendu, le fantastique, l'imaginaire et ceci tout en conservant leur intense témoignage humain.

Au départ il découvre les lieux d'intérêts en ville, en banlieue, à la campagne pour ensuite en identifier les détails chromatiques ou de matière des murs, des trottoirs, des structures architecturales, des objets trouvés ou abandonnés. C'est parmi ces archives illimités de lieux et d'objets qu'il capte, au travers de son objectif, le rêve

Le résultat est toujours suggestif et abstrait. Polo s'inspire d'artistes tels que Gérard Richter et Mark Rothko. Il invite le spectateur à la découverte d'une esthétique alternative, à la recherche de nouveaux critères de beauté, entre réalité et imagination

Depuis 15 ans, Polo développe son activité de photographe d'art par la prise et la constitution d'archive d'images et d'oeuvres de lieux qui le méritent pour l’originalité culturelle des communautés locales, leur entourage.

Les projets spécifiques, développés à ce jour, juxtaposent la particularité des textures, des couleurs et des matériaux que l'on retrouve en ville, en banlieue ou en milieu naturel; de la chaleur, de la lumière, des couleurs de Majorque à la métropole multi-éthnique et énergisante de New-York ou encore Londres, la polyédrique, avant-garde et artistique.

Polo offre à celui qui contemple son travail une beauté inattendue, émergente de sa vision peu conventionnelle engendrant des mondes imaginaires, et qui, à travers la coexistence et la conservation de l'architecture ancienne et contemporaine, de la nature luxuriante et des paysages industriels froids et métalliques, autorisent le rêve à se dévoiler.
